Three in One (5/7)

This is the fifth of seven devotions I have written for d365.org. d365 has been a favorite resource of mine for over ten years. It has been a privilege to write for them! Please visit the website for the full d365 experience.

PAUSE
Our God is one – unity.
Our God is three – diversity.
Our God is three in one – mystery.
LISTEN
Matthew 28:16-20 (CEB)
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him, but some doubted. Jesus came near and spoke to them, “I’ve received all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I’ve commanded you. Look, I myself will be with you every day until the end of this present age.”
THINK
These are the last words from Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew. With these words the nature of God is affirmed – three in one. This fluid being of God, who is both one and three, is promised to be with us until the end of the age. God is with us in the beginning and in the end. The disciples were there to hear these words and see him face to face. Yet, even in the presence of the Resurrected Christ, their responses varied. Some worshipped him and some doubted. Does this matter? It didn’t really seem to matter to Jesus, who sent them out to spread the Good News, no matter what their reaction was.
Sometimes I wonder if we think too much about ourselves. We get caught up worrying if we have enough faith, if doubting is right or wrong, or if we worshipped the “right” way. It seems to me that Christ is more concerned that we go out into the world, despite ourselves; yet, assured of his presence with us through it all. How does this perspective change the way can share your faith with others? How will you go out with this good news today?
PRAY
God of mystery, We don’t get it. We just don’t understand. Guide us through our misunderstandings, confusion, doubts, and fears. Free us to live with the confidence that you are always with us, no matter what, so that we may worship you with joy. Help us get swept up by your movement in the world so that we may know you more. Amen.
