This prayer was used at the end of my baptism retreat with children in pre-school through fourth grade and their parents. We stood in a circle and I led the prayer by walking along the inside of the circle, leading the different sounds, I would say the words of prayer over the storm sounds we created. If you have never made a rain storm with your body before, it is similar to ‘the wave’ you create at a baseball game. It’s important that the participants continue the sound until I walk in front of them with a new sound so half of the group may be doing something different than the other half of the group. It’s this effect that makes it sound so cool and so much like a rain storm. Feel free to walk around the circle as many times as you like, building up the sounds between each statement.
Speak the words in bold, action words are in italics. Walk around the circle with each action at least once.
Rain Prayer
Let us pray…
Rub your hands together and walk around the circle.
Snap your fingers around the circle.
Gracious Lord, we thank you for the new life you have given us through Holy Baptism.
Clap your hands around the circle.
Stomp your feet around the circle.
Continue to strengthen us with the Holy Spirit and let your gifts of grace grow within us:
Clap your hands around the circle.
The spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of your power, the spirit of knowledge, and the fear of the Lord,
Snap your fingers around the circle.
the spirit of joy in your presence, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Rub your hands together and walk around the circle.
Amen.
